Worksite Safety & Health Comm. Seeks a Safe
Environment for Learning/Working
The Worksite Safety and Health Committee has been busy
attempting to alleviate many of the challenging working
conditions with which we are faced when we go to work. At
times the process appears to be protracted but patience is
required as the due diligence of our members is beginning to
pay off.
WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL FOR FILING?
After a complaint from a member is received an attempt is
made with the district to resolve the complaint.
Unfortunately, the complaint is typically ignored and the
Association is forced to file a complaint with PEOSH who has
the authority to make the district comply. Following proper
protocol the Association has been able to gain many Pubic
Employees Occupational Safety and Health (PEOSH) visits.
WHAT OUTCOMES HAVE RESULTED FOR OUR WORKING/LEARNING
CONDITIONS?
The District has been ordered to fix the water
infiltration problems at PS #5, PS #13 and the International
High School. It has been directed to add hand rails and
antiskid treads at PS #15.
The Department of Labor, the safety arm of PEOSH, is also
involved in Paterson. They have mandated that Paterson fix
electrical receptacles in PS #3, #9, #15, #20, and Rosa
Parks High School. In Eastside High School the DOL is
requiring the district to fix missing floor tiles, broken
electrical outlets, reverse popularity on electrical
outlets, add signs to identify fire extinguishers, and
inspect fire extinguishers monthly. With continued
cooperation from P.E.A. members, the committee on Worksite
Safety and Health will continue to work with PEOSH and DOL
to resolve many of the sub par working conditions under
which we are required to work and our students are forced to
learn.
P.E.A. Establishes Partnership with
OSHA
The Association's Worksite Safety and Health Committee
recently brought a proposal in front of the Delegate
Assembly to enter in to a partnership with the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The partnership
will provide access to training, technical assistance and
many other collaborative ventures.
Also, be advised the Worksite Safety and Health
Committee is planning a workshop on indoor air
quality for April, an important topic for the
health of students and staff alike!
