Legislative Committees continue hearing testimony

This is the second edition of the Special Legislative Session newsletter, which is designed to provide NJEA members and leaders with the information they need to stay current on the state’s special legislative session.

As October winds down, the four committees continue to take testimony from the public and invited organizations.  The Legislature has a self-imposed deadline of Nov. 15 by which the four committees are expected to provide recommendations to Governor Corzine for review.  At that point, there are different scenarios for how the governor and Legislature will proceed.  NJEA will, of course, continue to provide updates on the special legislative session and the committees’ recommendations.

Public School Funding Reform

The Joint Legislative Committee on Public School Funding has held three meetings in October. At the October 10 meeting in Collingswood, several NJEA leaders testified before the committee.  On October 17, NJEA leaders again testified when the committee held another meeting in Newark.  Read their testimony.  Read more on this committee.

Government Consolidation and Shared Services

The Joint Legislative Committee on Government Consolidation and Shared Services met on October 18 and NJEA Vice President Barbara Keshishian testified to the entire committee. Read her testimony. There are additional public hearings scheduled on Oct. 26, Nov. 1, and
Nov. 9, and NJEA leaders will testify at each.

Public Employee Benefits Reform

The Joint Legislative Committee on Public Employee Benefits Reform has held two meetings in October.  On October 12, NJEA President Joyce Powell testified before the committee in Trenton. On October 18, NJEA leaders testified in Sewell.  Read their testimony.  Read more on this committee.

Constitutional Reform and Citizens Property Tax Constitutional Convention
